San Diego Comic Con 2013

San Diego Comic Con Logo

As a Star Wars fan who lives on the east coast of the United States, I always appreciate the efforts of those sites who spend time and energy to attend and cover west coast events like San Diego Comic Con and events outside the United States like Star Wars Celebration Europe II.

Sites like Rebelsum.Com, YodasNews.Com, YakFace.Com, Star Wars Action News and many more ensure that truly no fan is left behind. Their coverage of breaking news and world class photography is second to none.

As a Star Wars blogger who would desperately love to cover those events in person, circumstances dictate that I am unable to do so. Perhaps when Star Wars Celebration VII rolls around, I will be there with boots on the ground and doing my part to leave no fan behind.

Here at Fan Of The Wars, you will not find comprehensive coverage of San Diego Comic Con 2013. If you want comprehensive coverage, please visit the sites mentioned above. Instead, I will be shining the spotlight and providing commentary on a few choice pieces that stand out to me. Obviously, I will need to rely on an image or two found around the web, but I will always fully cite and link back to the sources of those images.

That out of the way, let’s get started with the Gentle Giant booth at San Diego Comic Con 2013!

Gentle Giant Logo

Gentle Giant Life-Size Vintage Kenner Stormtrooper Statue

Standing an incredible 6′ tall and coming with a life-size replica of the vintage Stormtrooper blaster riffle, this is an amazing life-size version of the 3 3/4″ Stormtrooper action figure that children of my generation grew up playing with. According to Gentle Giant, this statue will be released in 2014 and retail in the $1500-2500 range. Expect at least one other statue in this line, Darth Vader with telescoping lightsaber!

Gentle Giant Jumbo Vintage Kenner Wampa

Standing 22″ tall, this Wampa is the perfect companion to the 12″ vintage Kenner action figure line. Being pictured alongside Snowtrooper, Luke Skywalker in Hoth Gear, Han Solo in Hoth Gear and Hoth Rebel Solder, each standing 12″ tall, really provides a sense of scale to this massive figure.

Hasbro Logo

Hasbro’s San Diego Comic Con presentation felt very lacking from a collector’s point of view. They spent 35 minutes talking about the very controversial, non-collector focused Star Wars Angry Birds line of toys. That left only 15-20 minutes for everything else and no Q&A session at the end. Speculation is that Hasbro is holding back the majority of their new collector-focused reveals for Star Wars Celebration Europe II next week.

Hasbro Saga Legends Action Figures

According to Hasbro, children are not interested in extra articulation on action figures. They just want to collect the characters they love at a price point their parents will be willing to pay. With that in mind, Hasbro has changed their Saga Legends line to reduce the number of articulation points to 5 and they have changed the plastic on the figures to be more firm like that of the original vintage line. At the same time, they have committed to providing first-class paint deco on these figures. The result should be figures that feel vintage, stand up on their own and provide a play value that, frankly, the Black Series is not likely to provide. It is just a shame that Hasbro did not package these on vintage-style card backs.

Del Rey Logo

Star Wars Empire and Rebellion: Honor Among Thieves

At their San Diego Comic Con presentation, Del Rey unveiled the cover for James S. A. Corey’s  “Star Wars Empire and Rebellion: Honor Among Thieves.” Currently, the release date for this novel is set for March 4, 2014. This is the second book in the “Empire and Rebellion” trilogy and it focuses on Han Solo.

SW Empire And Rebellion - Honor Among ThievesOverall, San Diego Comic Con 2013 was a bit of a letdown for Star Wars fans. With Star Wars Celebration Europe II being only a week away, I get the feeling that Lucasfilm and Disney are waiting until then to release any major news on our favorite franchise. At least, I hope that’s the case!.
